I remember some old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials where people ran into each other in various situations getting “chocolate in my peanut butter” and “peanut butter in my chocolate.” I think of having romance in urban fantasy in much the same way.
Yes, they’re good separately. But they are also good together. The trick is maintaining a balance and remembering that the point of the whole exercise is to tell a great story about interesting people.
In my opinion it’s important to have realistic relationships in urban fantasy. If you want your reader to believe the magical/non-mundane parts of your world it is imperative that the “normal” parts be as realistic as possible to keep the reader invested. People don’t normally live in isolation. Most have relationships with family, friends, co-workers, bosses, and sometimes lovers. Or they worry about why they don’t. Some of these relationships go smoothly. Some don’t. Including both makes your characters and their lives more interesting and relatable to readers.
So, sometimes my characters will have romance in their lives—and it will work. Sometimes they’ll try to have romance in their lives and it won’t.
Just like regular folks.

ReplyDeleteI like urban fantasy when fae are mixed in with other supes. I'm sure there are more, but the only all fae books I can think of is the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton which was never a favorite of mine.

I enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series (not the show so much) which featured Fae and I also love the books by Patricia Briggs, both the Alpha & Omega series and Mercy Thompson series feature Fae.

ReplyDeleteI think The Exile sounds like a great read and I'm looking forward to reading it. I've enjoyed the Sabina Kane series by Jaye Wells and Kim Harrison's The Hollows series, both have interesting Fae characters.
