Hunters of the supernatural, the Execution Underground are an elite group tasked with protecting humanity...but at what price?
As an exorcist, David Aronowitz grew up the target of demonic assassins. Now he's a member of the Execution Underground and hellspawn everywhere fear his name. But when a demon slips into the seductive body of the only woman he's ever loved, David must confront the heartbreak of their past to save her.
The piece of her heart Allsún O'Hare gave to David so long ago left her trapped between two worlds: the Fae and the human. And when David comes to her rescue, fate reunites her with her
greatest temptation--and her biggest mistake.
Now, as they're swept together into a wicked game with the demon who controls her, David must decide if saving Allsún's life is worth sacrificing his own--and the future of humanity itself.
Qwills Thoughts
Kait Ballenger continues the Execution Underground series with book 2, Immortal Hunter. This is the story of Allsún and David. I honestly did not like either of them much at the beginning of the book, but as the story went on I came to see why they were acting the way the did.
David was a bit much to take at first and without his inner dialog I don't think I would have even given him a chance. He was outwardly kind of a jerk and inwardly hurt and actually a very nice guy. Allsún was keeping things to herself and running from David instead of trying to deal with issues that broke them apart 5 years earlier.
While trying to deal with their own issues (or trying to avoid them too), David and Allsún are dealing with a very real threat from the demons that David fights against as part of the Execution Underground. This part of the story is very grim and very dark with some terrible violence on the part of the demons. There is a lot of suspense and mystery as the Execution Underground tries to figure out what is going on and save Allsún.
By the end of the book I was hoping for Allsún and David's HEA even though I knew they would have one. However this romance was bittersweet and came with a lot of baggage and things to work out, which made it all the more realistic and all that more heartfelt. I got the feeling that David and Allsún would never take for granted what they have together.
The supporting cast of characters (mostly the rest of the local Execution Underground) were wonderful as usual. Immortal Hunter is a very well-balanced story with romance, mystery, action, and more than a touch of the dark and gritty.
