Guest Blog by Tammy Falkner and Giveaway - June 7, 2013

Please welcome Tammy Falkner to The Qwillery. The Magic of "I Do", the second novel in the Fae series, was published on June 4, 2013.

As a writer, I am commonly asked questions about my writing rituals. Do I have a soundtrack for my books? Do I have a special place where I write? Do I have a special coffee blend that keeps me feeling inspired? The answer is really no. I need three things in order to write –

1. Quiet
2. No internet
3. To put my butt in the chair and get it done.

Number three is more important than the first two. I’d like all three, but I don’t often get all three.

Number one: My husband is really good at providing the quiet when he’s at home. I hear him often say “Mommy’s writing a book. Let’s leave her alone.” Or “Mommy’s busy. Let’s don’t talk to her right now.” Or my teenager says to my nine-year-old, “I’ll make your freaking sandwich.” Ok, so he’s not quite as good at running interference. But husband is really good at it. He’s also really good at getting me back on track. (See number two above.) I don’t know if every writer experiences this, but I get ideas all the time for new stories. I sometimes post about them on Facebook. And they come to me a lot when I’m on deadline. A few second after my Facebook post, I’ll get a text like this:

See what I mean? It’s annoying as all get out at the time it happens, but then I meet my deadline and I have to give him a little bit of credit. (He would take all the credit if I let him.)

Oh, wait. He did take all the credit one time. Here’s a little sidebar: He has a t-shirt that has a cover of my book on it, and it says, “I’m married to the author. And I inspired pages 321-333.” (Those pages just happen to be a passionate love scene.) He wears it to the grocery store. So, not only is he wearing a shirt with a passionate love scene cover and page numbers, and usually a naked man-chest, he’s also talking with people from church, scouting, and others from our community while wearing it. And he never blinks an eye over it. He just wears it proudly.

Back to what I need in order to write – we’ve talked about my need for quiet, and no distractions like the internet. But in the end, the only thing I really need is to put my butt in the chair and get it done. I can’t write while I play on Facebook. I can’t write while I dream up my next story. I can’t write while people talk to me. I can’t write unless I put my butt in the chair and write. Seems easy, doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s sometimes a struggle to just make it happen. But every time I do, I’m really happy with the results. And I hope you will be too!
