Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
Quirk Books, March 1, 2009
Trade Paperback and eBook, 320 pages

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read.

  1. I've read all her books but Pride and Prejudice has gotten the most rereads of all of them. I just love it: the demonstration of primogeniture, the explanation of class distinctions, but especially the characters. Elizabeth & Darcy forever. Thanks for the P/P party Q!

  7. I started reading Jane Austin books when I was just 12 years old but immediately fell in love with her writing. Every time I read the following book it would become my "favorite" and when I finished Northanger Abbey I knew that at last I had finally found her one book that for me would forever be the "best" Jane Austin book.

That day I once again went to my small local library and checked out her last novel, Persuasion, and found out that it was originally published together with Northanger Abbey! Oh, how I would have loved having a copy of that original book! I loved that both stories were partly set in Bath, especially since Jane Austenlived there from 1801 to 1805.

I've decided because of that my "favorite" book by Jane Austin was that impossible to get one that had BOTH Northanger Abby and Persuasion neatly tucked together between the covers! Now if I could just find a copy someday at a yard sale!

Of course the other book I'll be looking for while I go through all those boxes stacked full of books is Beauty, what it is and how to Retain it by A Lady who wisely said so many years ago words that reflect today as well:

"But of all women in Europe, English women do least to improve or preserve their beauty". "They follow fashion however absurd in a blind aimless way, being content to do as every on else does, and having but very hazy notions of what true beauty is. They will pinch their feet and waists, paint their faces, dye their hari; but as to any real knowledge of how really to improvee the prescious gift committed to their trust, they are ignorant."

Words wise for those of us today as it was when it was printed all those years ago!
