Interview with Hannah Jayne and Giveaway - November 4, 2011

Please welcome Hannah Jayne to The Qwillery for a second visit. Hannah previously visited as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge. Under Attack, the 2nd book in The Underworld Detection Agency Chronicles, was published by Kensington on November 1, 2011.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Hannah:  Thanks so much for having me back - I'm happy to be here!

TQ:  Please tell us about Under Attack, the second novel in your Underworld Detection Agency Chronicles.

Hannah:  Well, Alex Grace returns with a request for Sophie -- help him find the mystical Vessel of Souls so that he can be returned to grace. The task doesn't seem too hard until Sophie is faced with a team of seriously bad fallen angels hell-bent on taking her out. Throw in a mysterious stranger with a sexy British accent and an ankle-biting chihuahua named ChaCha, and the action never stops!

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most in the series?

Hannah:  I think Vlad. Vlad always surprises me! He was supposed to make his appearance in book 2, only, but we all know that didn't happen. He's a typical teenager through and through -- if I ignore him and focus on the other characters, he ends up doing something ridiculous or jail-worthy. Typical... ;)

TQ:  If you worked at the Underworld Detection Agency, what would you be doing?

Hannah:  Hiding under my desk. Haha... Actually, I'd want to be in the Vampire or Fallen Angel Division. Both of those sport hot clients! Anything but the Hobgoblin or Zombie processing areas -- I think I'd have trouble with the slobber and falling body parts.

TQ:  Barring paranormality, which character in the series is most like you?

Hannah:  That's a tough question! Since Under Wraps was my first book, it was the first time a lot of my friends and family had read my writing. I constantly got "you are Sophie!" but I don't think so! Sure, we have some similarities, but overall, there is a little bit of me in each one of the characters. Except maybe Steve -- I hope! Sophie and I are probably the most similar, but I like to think I have a little bit of Nina's fashion sense, some of Vlad's dry humor, and maybe Alex's street smarts, too!

TQ:  If you weren't an author what would you like to do?

Hannah:  I would like to be a forensic pathologist, an FBI agent, or a kept woman. FYI: I'd be horrible at all of those. Bodies don't get to me but maggots do, I giggle every time I lie ("are you a spy?" "No..." giggle, giggle) and I'm ruthlessly independent and eternally restless. But a girl can dream, can't she?

TQ:  What do you wish you'd known when the 1st book came out that you know now?

Hannah:  Not to dwell on bad reviews. I don't have a problem if people don't like my work; it's not for everyone. But some reviewers can be downright hateful! Writers have to have thick skins right from the beginning, but we're people, too.

TQ:  Are there any other genres in which you would like to write in addition to urban fantasy?

Hannah:  Yes! I was laid up for the last seven weeks with a post-op shoulder and I started writing a teen thriller that I'm really jazzed about, so fans should see that in a year or so. I love writing Young Adult and there are some traditional/cozy mysteries in the near future, too!

TQ:  What's next?

Hannah:  Well... book three will be out in March, 2012, and Sophie and Nina are faced with a slew of murders -- and a handsome new man with eyes for Nina.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Hannah:  Thanks so much for having me -- I always have a great time here!

  2. That's a fun question since my ideal job has changed so much during the years. As a young girl I was fascinated with the movie Gypsy so I wanted to be a strip tease dancer, then I was fascinated by truck stop restaurants so I wanted to be a truck driver, then I wanted to own a small shop and now I would love to do something that required me to scuba dive every day. Ask me tom. and the answer will be different.

I just got Under Wraps for my Kindle and I can't wait to read it :)

I know this is completely cliche but.... I'd say my dream job would be as an owner of a bookstore where I have a capable manager who actually runs it for me and a book reviewer. I've loved to read ever since I learned to read and everyone, friends and family, thought I should be a librarian. However, they all agreed I'd get fired cuz I was always reading on the job.

If I could do anything, I'd go back to my old career. I had to stop because of a very bad back and, besides needing surgery to fix the problem, I had to retire from a job I loved and was passionate about.

  36. My dream job is to own a small bookstore / cafe in my hometown. I have a lot of plans for it - it is still within the realms of possibility - but the perfect building I coveted was torn down for a new bank. :( I guess I shouldn't worry too hard about losing the location, since it's still ~5 years before I can move towards making it a reality. Que sera, sera.
