Interview with Harry Connolly and Giveaway - August 31, 2011

Please welcome Harry Connolly to The Qwillery.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Harry:  I like to think of myself as quirkless. I made a serious effort some years ago to remove ritual, habit, and all the other crutches some writers have. I don't write in yellow ink on black paper. I don't play a mix tape of Beastie Boys and steam locomotive sound effects. I just try to focus and do the work.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Harry:  Yes! Actually, I plot out the beginning and middle of the book and trust that the end will reveal itself in the first draft.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Twenty Palaces series?

Harry:  A whole crazy mix of things, but for this answer I'll focus on one: it's standard for modern urban fantasy to have a "magic police squad" in it somewhere--people who decide what's allowed and what isn't--and the protagonist is often a loner who won't be held back by the rules.

Well, I don't much like that trope, and I wanted to recast those loners as villains.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do to create the world in the Twenty Palaces series?

Harry:  It's pretty much our world, except that extradimensional monsters occasionally slip in to feed on us. Because I didn't want the magic or the monsters to be religious or folkloric (mostly), the research has been mostly to make sure the creatures I put in the book are *not* similar to the creatures of myth and legend.

TQ:  Please briefly describe the system of magic in the Twenty Palaces world.

Harry:  Actually, how the magic works is a mystery in the series, gradually revealed over the books, so I'm not going to go into a lot of detail.

I will say that there is summoning magic, which calls and (hopefully) binds extradimensional creatures to our world. Other kinds of magic affect the world (and the people in it) in various direct and subtle ways. Both are cast by making specific marks on solid surfaces, along with other components.

TQ:  Describe Circle of Enemies (Twenty Palaces 3) in 140 characters or less.

Harry:  People have begun to notice Ray's string of successes for the Twenty Palace Society, and that's a bad thing.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Circle of Enemies?

Harry:  The final 40 or so pages.

TQ:  In Circle of Enemies, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Harry:  The easiest was Wally King, because I understood his relationship to Ray and the other characters. I knew how he felt and what he wanted.

There was no "most difficult" though, because the book is about a circle of people who were once family but have drifted apart, who have strong bonds and deep resentments, who see things as they really are or maybe don't. The whole "circle" was difficult to write, because their relationships to Ray and each other were so complicated.

TQ:  Do you and Ray Lilly have anything in common?

Harry:  We both like mystery novels. We both hate to have dried sweat on our faces. Aside from that, we're not really alike at all.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Twenty Palaces series?

Harry:  Plan? Is this "plan" a custom among you Earth People?

I'm going to keep writing them as long as I feel I can wring a worthwhile story out of them, and as long as readers want to read them.

TQ:  What's next?

Harry:  The next Twenty Palaces novel is written and the one after that has been started. I also have a book trailer for my newest novel: http://www.harryjconnolly.com/blog/?p=5232

I also took a break from the grimmity grimness of the Twenty Palaces series to write a light urban fantasy with a 65 year old socialite and pacifist in the lead. My agent has that on her to-read pile right now. Beyond that, I have a few ideas I want to explore, and I have been wanting to branch out into other genres for a while. We'll see.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Circle of Enemies
Twenty Palaces 3
(Del Rey, August 30, 2011)
Former car thief Ray Lilly is now the expendable grunt of a sorcerer responsible for destroying extradimensional predators summoned to our world by power-hungry magicians. Luckily, Ray has some magic of his own, and so far it’s kept him alive. But when a friend from his former gang calls him back to his old stomping grounds in Los Angeles, Ray may have to face a threat even he can’t handle. A mysterious spell is killing Ray’s former associates, and they blame him. Worse yet, the spell was cast by Wally King, the sorcerer who first dragged Ray into the brutal world of the Twenty Palace Society. Now Ray will have to choose between the ties of the past and the responsibilities of the present, as he and the Society face not only Wally King but a bizarre new predator.

Game of Cages
Twenty Palaces 2
(Del Rey, August 31, 2010)
A SECRET HIGH-STAKES AUCTION

As a wealthy few gather to bid on a predator capable of destroying all life on earth, the sorcerers of the Twenty Palace Society mobilize to stop them. Caught up in the scramble is Ray Lilly, the lowest of the low in the society—an ex–car thief and the expendable assistant of a powerful sorcerer. Ray possesses exactly one spell to his name, along with a strong left hook. But when he arrives in the small town in the North Cascades where the bidding is to take place, the predator has escaped and the society’s most powerful enemies are desperate to recapture it. All Ray has to do is survive until help arrives. But it may already be too late.

Child of Fire
Twenty Palaces 1
(Del Rey, September 29, 2011)
Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He’s the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him–or let someone else do the job.

Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise’s next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who’s sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for supernatural power, he must find–and destroy–the source of that inhuman magic.

The Postmortal

Language: English
Genre:  Science Fiction

Book cover and description:

John Farrell is about to get "The Cure."
Old age can never kill him now.
The only problem is, everything else still can . . .

Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors. Witty, eerie, and full of humanity, The Postmortal is an unforgettable thriller that envisions a pre-apocalyptic world so real that it is completely terrifying.

The UK cover and description (from Harper Voyager):

Please note that the UK book will not be published until  September 29, 2011. The Kindle ebook is available today.

A gripping, compulsive thriller set in a future where the cure for ageing has been discovered… to devastating consequences

“You got me. I don’t want to die. I’m terrified of death. I fear there’s nothing beyond it and that this existence is the only one I’ll ever possess. That’s why I’m here.” (An excerpt from the digital journal of John Farrell, cure age 29) 2019. Humanity has witnessed its greatest scientific breakthrough yet: the cure for ageing. Three injections and you’re immortal – not bulletproof or disease-proof but you’ll never have to fear death by old age. For John Farrell, documenting the cataclysmic shifts to life after the cure becomes an obsession. Cure parties, cycle marriages, immortal livestock: the world is revelling in the miracles of eternal youth. But immortality has a sinister side, and when a pro-death terrorist explosion kills his newly-cured best friend, John soon realizes that even in a world without natural death, there is always something to fear. Now, John must make a new choice: run and hide forever, or stay and fight those who try to make immortal life a living hell. The e-book edition contains exclusive extra content - for those who want to find out even more consequences of the cure for ageing.

My thoughts:

The Postmortal is a chilling story of our world gone wrong after the "Cure" for aging is found. Imagine what would happen if no one died from old age? Drew Magary deftly leads us down the postmortal path with a richly developed post-Cure world. The story is told through the eyes of John Farrell, a 29 year old lawyer at the time he takes the Cure. The novel is Farrell's journal and collection of articles from June 2019 to June 2079, 60 years post-Cure.

Farrell is a flawed character. There were times that I was almost moved to tears by Farrell's emotion - when he's with his father, when he relates the birth of his son. There were times when Farrell's actions or observations made me laugh. For the most part, he's a fairly average, though somewhat selfish person. Despite this I like him... most of the time.

The world Farrell shares with us has embraced the Cure with little thought regarding the consequences of what is going to happen when everyone lives forever. What makes this story ring true is the time that Drew Magary has spent on the little details - for example, the evolution of new 'religions,' new types of marriages, how overcrowding in prisons is dealt with when the prison population does not age, the Chinese reaction to the Cure, the loss of resources, and the new types of jobs that evolve in the years following the Cure. It all feels terrifyingly plausible. This is a sobering and, in its way, a cautionary tale.

Despite the somber topic, The Postmortal is a novel that I did not want to put down. I had to see what happened as the world moved ineluctably toward the not so wonderful future. It's not often that I read an apocalyptic/dystopian story that terrifies me, moves me, and makes me laugh. The Postmortal is just such a story.

I give The Postmortal 4 1/2 Qwills.

Interview with Maria Lima and Giveaway - August 30, 2011

Please welcome Maria Lima to The Qwillery. Blood Sacrifice (Blood Lines 5) is out today!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Maria:  I write in spurts--like a sprinter, not a long-distance runner. Instead of writing every day, I tend to bunch up and write many thousands of words over a few days. Somehow, this works for me.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Maria:  Totally a plantser! A hybrid in that many of the important story beats are known but getting there is not.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Blood Lines series?

Maria:  At first, the series was going to be a light, cozy mystery with some paranormal elements. I had this interesting scene in my head of a woman accidentally locked into a morgue and one of the bodies sits up. Somehow, as the writing went on, I realized that this was less chick lit and more urban fantasy. Once I got the first book written, I knew I wanted to know more about these characters.

TQ:  Why did you set the series in Texas?

Maria:  I grew up in the Hill Country and loved it. That area is full of contradictions and contrasts: old school cowboys/ranchers mixed with urban professionals who escape for the weekend. I also wanted to portray the Texas I knew--not the one pictured on TV or in movies.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do to create the world in the Blood Lines series?

Maria:  Tons and tons! Everything from reading Funeral Home magazine issues online to taking working vacations to Vancouver, BC. I do a lot online, but to get the real feel of a place requires having been there in person. Photos are also key. My parents still live in San Antonio, so I’ll sometimes ask them to take a drive up US 281 and take pictures for me.

TQ:  Describe Blood Sacrifice (Blood Lines 5) in 140 characters or less.

Maria:  The end of the beginning. Blood Sacrifice wraps up the story of Keira Kelly’s transformation from nobody to becoming Kelly heir. In the end, it’s always about family.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Blood Sacrifice?

Maria:  I love a particular scene where Keira has to save Tucker (her brother). I think I captured her sense of helplessness combined with a sense of “need to succeed”. Tucker’s always been the strong one, and in this particular scene, he’s so not.

TQ:  In Blood Sacrifice, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Maria:  Keira’s mother, Branwen was so very, very tough. I needed to really get inside her head so that I could write her from Keira’s POV. The easiest: always Tucker. He’s my “surprise” character all the way back from the first book. Originally meant as an occasional role, Tucker sneaked in under my radar and he’s been essential to the group from the beginning. I feel I know him so very well.

TQ:  Who should play Keira Kelly and Adam Walker if the books become movies?

Maria:  This is always such a tough question. Katie McGrath (from the TV series Merlin) is very much how I’ve pictured Keira as is Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13). Adam is a LOT tougher to cast. Best I can do is an older Matt Bomer (White Collar) crossed with Adam Ant when he was in his 30s.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Blood Lines series?

MariaBlood Sacrifice is the last book contracted for the series. There’s a possibility of other related books, but nothing concrete.

TQ:  What's next?

Maria:  I’m currently recording the audiobooks for the series. Yup, that means I’m doing the reading! The audiobooks will be released via Wildside Press & Audible.com. No timeframe yet, as I’m just getting started. I’m also working on a new collaboration project with a good friend. It’s so not ready for prime time, but I think it will be rather cool once we can unveil it. I’ve also got some other new book ideas percolating. I might surprise even myself. :)

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

About Maria's Books

Blood Sacrifice
Blood Lines 5
(Pocket, August 30, 2011)
All's fair in blood and war. . . .

Talk about wedding crashers from hell. Keira Kelly and her sexy vampire king, Adam, are about to tie the proverbial knot—sort of—when an uninvited blood relative shows up to cast a long, dark shadow over the happy occasion. Adam's brother Gideon comes bearing the one-size-fits-all gift of bad news: an ancient, convoluted Challenge thrown down upon the entire Kelly clan. It seems the dreaded forces of the Dark Fae have declared war on Keira's family, and at stake is the land that is rightfully theirs. But while the Kellys gather their troops in a historic San Antonio hotel to strategize, there's mayhem back in Rio Seco. The old cemetery is vandalized, fires break out, and—worst of all—the Kelly clan matriarch and leader, Keira's great-great-grandmother Minerva, goes missing. Should Keira risk breaking the Challenge rules by returning to her beloved home, or should she continue the waiting game that seems the only other option? With everything she loves and maybe even her life on the line, she has only one chance to get the answer right.

Blood Heat
Blood Lines 4
(Pocket, October 26, 2010)
Texas is heating up. . . .

The summer heat wave that's hit Rio Seco, Texas, has even the vampires complaining, but now that Keira—the Kelly Heir—is home from Vancouver, the weather isn't the only thing too hot to handle. Keira should be setting up her court and planning the big reception at which she and her consort, vampire ruler Adam Walker, will receive the magical leaders from the local area, but pomp and circumstance just aren't Keira's thing, especially not with trouble smoldering in her domain. A werewolf couple has mysteriously gone missing from a local pack, and when Keira is asked by their leader to investigate, she finds that some dissatisfied neighbors may have been taking, well, strong action against the wer community—action that could be repeated and could involve Keira and those she loves. With the reception looming and danger fast blazing out of control, the pressure is on Keira to keep Texas safe for supernaturals. Sometimes, it's just not that great to be Heir.

Blood Kin
Blood Lines 3
(Pocket, October 27, 2009)
The perils of power...

Keira Kelly has come into her full powers, and they are frighteningly strong, creating a distance between her and her human friends in her beloved Rio Seco. It is time to obey her great-great-grandmother Gigi's orders and rejoin her family in northwest Canada, where Keira can learn to handle her dangerous new skills. She'll have friends with her every step of the way -- her shapeshifter brother Tucker, his beloved Niko, and, to Keira's dismay, her cousin on her mother's side, Daffyd ap Geraint, the Sidhe prince who suddenly appeared in her life and now refuses to leave -- but her vampire lover Adam has insisted on staying in Texas. And while there are certainly perks to being Family, such as a private Learjet for the flight to Canada and a fabulous penthouse condo overlooking Vancouver, there are threats looming that nobody, not even Gigi, anticipated. Keira's Sidhe inheritance from her mother is far more important than anyone ever realized, and the fate of the Family may depend upon what she does next....

Blood Bargain
Blood Lines 2
(Pocket, September 29, 2009
Something is not right at Wild Moon Ranch...

Keira Kelly has settled in with handsome Adam Walker, but happy-ever-after is not so easy when your vampire lover seems determined to deny his true nature. With Adam starving himself of blood and growing weak, Keira needs to work out how to persuade him to take care of himself, something she's fi nding diffi cult to do -- even with the advice of her brother Tucker, a millennium-old ex-Viking shapeshifter. And people have started disappearing in the Rio Seco area, making Keira worry about what this could mean, both for her friends in Rio Seco and to the community she and Adam have been creating at the ranch. But her investigation only seems to bring more trouble, especially when a clue leads her to an abandoned cemetery that Keira knew well when she was younger...one that has always been extremely important to her magical family. Evil is defi nitely walking once again in the Texas Hill Country. Can Keira discover where the danger lies...before danger discovers her?

Matters of the Blood
Blood Lines 1
(Pocket, August 25, 2009)
If you thought your family was strange...

Try being Keira Kelly. A member of a powerful paranormal family, Keira elected to stay among humans in the Texas Hill Country when the rest of the clan moved (lock, stock, and grimoire) to Canada. But family duty means still having to keep an eye on cousin Marty -- a genetic aberration who turned out 100% human, poor guy. And recently Keira's been having violent dreams -- or are they visions? -- featuring Marty as the victim of a vicious murder. Something sinister seems to be brewing in little Rio Seco. Can Keira get to the bottom of it all while avoiding entanglement with her former lover, Sheriff Carlton Larson? And what does she plan to do about the irresistible and enigmatic Adam Walker? When this old friend shows up as the new owner of a local ranc and wants to get better acquainted, Keira is more than happy to be welcoming...until she suspects that Adam could be intimately connected to the dangerous doings in Rio Seco.

Interview with Caitlin Kittredge and Giveaway - August 29, 2011

Please welcome to Caitlin Kittredge to The Qwillery.  Devil's Business (Black London 4) is out tomorrow.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Caitlin:  I need background noise. TV, music--something. If it's dead silent I get bored and unfocused very quickly.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Caitlin:  Definitely a plotter. I need to know what happens next or I tend to wander off and get stuck on the draft I'm writing, which is never fun.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Black London series?

Caitlin:  I wanted to write a series that wasn't set in the US, and it sort of grew from there.

TQ:  Describe Devil's Business in 140 characters or less.

CaitlinDevil's Business sees Jack and Pete trying to stop a demon with a penchant for ritual murder, and his eye on Armageddon.

TQ:  Why did you set Devil's Business in Los Angeles?

Caitlin:  I wanted to move my characters out of their comfort zone, and LA is so weird and amazing in its own right. It's tailor-made for setting a novel about trying to cause the apocalypse.

TQ:  In Devil's Business, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Caitlin:  The most difficult was the bad guy (who I can't give details about for spoiler reasons.) He's ancient evil--the primal sort of evil--but I didn't want him to be a cartoon character, because that's no fun. I wanted to give him layers and humanity, so it was hard to distill this primal force into a human looking and sounding character. The easiest was Belial, my favorite demon. He always gets the good lines.

TQ:  Who should play Pete Caldecott and Jack Winter if the books become movies?

Caitlin:  I don't know--I like David Tennant for Jack, especially after seeing him in the Fright Night remake. For Pete, I'm open to suggestions!

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Devil's Business?

Caitlin:  Definitely the first time Jack and the ancient evil come face to face, in the guy's creepy little lair that he's made for himself. I had a lot of fun writing it--I like atmospheric scenes.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Black London series?

Caitlin:  At least two more! Soul Trade, the next, will be out in early 2012.

TQ:  What's next?

Caitlin:  Next, obviously, is Devil's Business. And my second YA novel, The Nightmare Garden, will be out on Valentine's Day, 2012. I'm incredibly excited about that one.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Caitlin:  Thanks for having me!

Thank you to the crews from Alabama, Canada, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee who are here to assist CL&P with power restoration.  If I missed any crews that are here, thank you too! Please keep everyone everywhere who has been affected by the Irene in your thoughts. Thank you.

I think genres have been blurring for awhile now. I mean look at all the different tags applied to books when you go to Amazon/Goodreads. I know in my personal library apply a minimal of 2 to 3 different tags. I personally don't mind~I just simply require to the book to be a great read. Thanks for the giveaway!
