Book Databases - November 5, 2010

I've been spending a lot of the last 2 days going through one of my book databases to make sure that books in series are labeled correctly. I use Readerware to keep track of my books. When books are imported into the database the information is pulled from a lot of sources, but rarely does it include all the series information. Sometime there is no series information at all. Other times there is only the series name. This is not the fault of the program I use. I don't like reading series books out of order so this is a necessary task. So I am going through all the books in the database to make sure I know which series and what number within the series.

I've made a few discoveries: 1) I am missing books from some series; 2) not all authors include an easy to use (numbered) list of their series books at their websites, and 3) series names are sometimes inconsistent between authors' sites and various book sites. I am presently up to "K" in my database of 1,638 books so I don't think I will finish today.

I also have some of my books listed on Goodreads. I keep forgetting to update my list there so will get to that at some point. I like the versatility of the program on my computers more. Just my preference.

How do you keep track of your books?

  2. The only list that is accurate is my "future readies list."

  3. I use LibraryThing. It lets me catalogue just about any way I want to, add tags so I can sort by important-to-me topics, and has built-in series lists that show me what I already own. Plus I'm able to track not only the books I own, but the books I've read via other sources (like libraries).

And yes, I'm a little anal.

  4. My books live on two very small shelves, and the shelf in my wardrobe for those half-naked man covers. I haven't got much space, so I don't really allow myself much of an accumulation of books. I use a website which lets me swap books I've read with others, so those that I'm done with go into a pile at the bottom of my wardrobe, waiting for someone to want it. I guess my brain is my catalogue - I know what I have, and where it is. :)

  5. I've been using LibraryThing, Goodreads, and now Shelfari. I also have a system on my phone, but I don't use it so much so I'm thinking about removing it as I don't seem to keep up with it. But I like using the different sites. I would like if some one would have a site that could say, Oh, such & such author has a new book in the series you have started. Just so I would know one is coming out.
