Banned Books Week 2010 - September 25 - October 2, 2010 - Giveaway

Banned Books. The phrase makes my hair curl, well curl more. Read something that you find objectionable? You could stop reading. You could make sure that your children don't read it. But trying to ban it so that others can't read it. No. As the ALA poster above says, "Think for Yourself and Let Others Do the Same." Really!

The American Library Association has a lot of information about banned and challenged books here. You can read or download a PDF of books challenged or banned in 2009-2010 here.

The ALA describes Banned Books Week much better than I:

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.
Read more here.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association; American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression; the American Library Association; American Society of Journalists and Authors; Association of American Publishers; and the National Association of College Stores. It is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

  2. Great Giveaway!! I can't believe people just ban books left right and centre. They need to read these books before doing such a thing!

  4. It only took me 11 hours after I RT'd the link before I could follow it myself... :)
I don't know why I am still amazed that there even ARE banned books. But I am. I am also more inclined to read a book someone thinks should be banned, than I might've been before it received that dubious distinction. It's kinda like free advertising for the author, in my mind. :)

  8. Great giveaway! It's still weird to think that books can be banned. I mean times have changed drastically and there are issues that need addressing.
